I guess one of the movie which i can mirror myself to this year is probably Annie Hall. I almost teared when i look through the film again last night.. even if its not a sappy love story, this movie reminds me of our situation. Its been a year for me and a year for the protagonist, Alvy.. But somehow i have to learn to move on... just like in the end of the film.

So i figured out on how to make a film looks aesthetically beautiful... Just watch stuff from Paul Thomas Anderson and mix them together with Scorsese's and Kubrick's.. you will find some good resemblance with these 2 masters in Paul's movies. If you watch Paul's movie and then make some reference from Scorsese and Kubrick's.. you will realise that Paul Thomas Anderson copies some shots from them. I think if you learn how Paul copies and referred shots from the masters i bet i can also do that.
Of course you cant just copy blindly.. there is one rule in cinema.. Visual Storytelling. You dont put an intense or romantic scene and put it on a wide shot.. or a slow and serene moment with a fast action packed cuts... just because it looks nice. I believe that watching what ever Paul Thomas Anderson applied to his films (or maybe in that case Darren Arronofsky too) you can learn a lot on visual aesthetics and story telling.
Take the Coen Brothers for example.. they are the masters of visual storytelling.. You dont need a good script or dialogue or to tell a story, actions.. face reaction.. the cuts or the whole composition of the shot can tell that story to the audience and make sure you build that shot so that the audience understands it. Just take Paul Anderson's film There Will Be Blood, the first few minutes reminds me of Space Odyssey 2001. There are no dialogue from the protagonist but there are actions which tells us the Audience who is was and what he is doing. In an analogical terms the shots and narratives is like a baby. The baby doesnt know how to talk at first.. then slowly it moves on to the talk and slowly to its characters then to his problems then to his situation and lastly the climax. There Will Be Blood is simply based on character developments.
I will put that in mind and learn what Paul Thomas Anderson put in his films.. so maybe i will apply it in mine in the future... |
